How did you decide on the sound for "Back"?

[Caroline's] first ideas for the song - the main rhythm and driving drum beats, the guitar sounds, and the melody of the chorus - were all very pop-punk sounding, and as the lyrics took form they too started sounding very "pop-punk" to us. We knew we wanted the song to sound as pop-punk as possible, but we also wanted it to sound really open and have a very nostalgic vibe to it, which is why we also went with a lot of reverb on the drums and guitars.

What do you have planned to follow this release?

We're currently working on the rest of our EP, which we plan to put out sometime this summer! We are also working on some really cool new merch right now, and we have a show coming up at The Masquerade in Atlanta on May 24th, opening for Origami Angel!

Is there anything you'd change now about past music you've written?

I [Caroline] do my best not to dwell on the past, actually. I know that might be hard to believe considering the single we just put out! But lately I've been trying really hard to look forward and focus on the future instead of dwelling too much on the past. That being said, I'm also still really proud of the songs on our last EP. We've definitely grown a lot as artists since we put it out, but when I listen back now I feel like the songs still hold up.

If you were an inanimate object, what would it be?

[Alex] A stuffed animal.

[Caroline] A rubber ball.

[Ian] A safety net.

Do you think fans can assume that music following "Back" will sound similar?

I [Caroline] definitely think all of our songs have certain type of sound, or even just a vibe, to them that make them sound like "ours", but I also think we also tend to work on a very broad spectrum when we're writing songs and some of our songs borrow influences that other songs don't borrow, and so forth. So while Back came out sounding very "quintessential pop-punk", I think fans can expect all of our songs to sound a little bit different, but still like they came from us.

Any plans for an album?

We're working on our next EP right now. We'd love to eventually do a full album but right now we're focusing on releasing songs in smaller batches.

How do you think your fanbase is different in other areas of the world compared to your local fanbase?

For the most part they all have a lot in common. The main difference is that we've met most of the people in our local fan base at shows!

What's the best part of being in Safety Net? Is there anything you'd change?

The three of us have a great dynamic and I think we are all really on the same page musically. There's not really much to change right now!

Do any of you drink milk?

[Caroline] I've hated milk since I was a little kid. I'll put almond milk in cereal but that's about it.

[Alex] I'm more of a soy or almond milk kind of guy.

[Ian] I'm a milkshake guy.

Lastly, any other plans for 2020?

We're going to finish working on our next EP and focus on getting that out, and otherwise, we're hoping to play as many shows as possible
