We got the opportunity to talk to up and coming atlanta-based band "Safety Net"! Here's what they said.
What inspired you to write this song?
[Caroline] “How Does It Feel?” is inspired by a rough time I was going through and the way that I was able to vocalize how I felt. The song is about feeling overwhelmingly not okay and wondering if you are the only one who feels that way. It’s about the feeling you get when you’re in a room full of people but you still feel by yourself. Sometimes when you’re depressed or suffering you become so isolated that you start to feel like you’re experiencing everything around you from behind a thick pane of glass. You start to become desperate to know if anyone else feels the same way. So that’s the feeling we were trying to capture with this song.
How would you describe your band in two words? (not genres such as pop, rock, etc)
[Alex] Honest and emotional.
[Caroline] Genuine, and… zany.
[Ian] Angsty and edgy.
Dream bands to tour with?
[Caroline] The Maine, Waterparks, Paramore… and, even though we aren’t really in the same genre as them, Misterwives - they’re such an incredible band and I feel like they’d be so fun to tour with.
[Ian] Paramore and All Time Low.
[Alex] I’d say Twenty One Pilots, and definitely Waterparks and Paramore as well.
Speaking of tour, any plans to tour soon?
[Caroline] Not right now, though we definitely would love to as soon as we get an opportunity! Doing a DIY tour isn’t really in our budget right now unfortunately. We do want to start playing shows outside of Atlanta very soon though!
What caused you to want to be in a band?
[Caroline] I knew I wanted to make music and sing in a band from a young age. I remember my dad taking me to see Paramore when I was 15 and just being in awe of Hayley Williams and wanting to be just like her. It was just something I always wanted to do growing up.
[Alex] I love making music with other people, it really adds energy to the process and you get to make things you never could on your own!
[Ian] To make music while making new friends. And to meet girls, of course.
How would you say this song differs from previous things you’ve written? How would you say it’s similar?
[Caroline] The song definitely has more layers and components to it than any song on our first EP. That was really exciting for us in the studio as we were seeing it come together. You can definitely compare this song to those on our EP and see how we’ve progressed as musicians over the last year. I think also it definitely feels a little more emotional and intimate than some of those songs, which was also a goal we had when starting to write new music. In the same sense, though, we’ve made a point of writing all of our songs from an honest and emotional standpoint since day one, so in that sense, it’s similar to our previous songs.
Based on fans’ reactions, how would you say the “How Does It Feel” was taken by fans?
[Caroline] I think it went over well! People who had been listening to us since before we put it out seemed to like it. We were also told by a lot of our friends - most of whom are musicians - that the track came out sounding really great and that they could hear how we’ve developed our sound and grown as musicians over the last year. That felt really affirming to us.
If you were to choose one place to get food from for the rest of your life, which would you choose?
[Caroline] That’s really tough. Recently I’ve been caught up in a love affair with Hattie B’s Hot Chicken, so probably there.
[Alex] The Publix deli section #pubsubs
[Ian] I just want pizza...
Milkshakes and french fries? Yes or No?
[Caroline] I love them both separately, but combining them… no thanks.
[Alex] I'mma say no, it's never as good as I expect it to be.
[Ian] Yum.
Lastly, can we expect anything from Safety Net in the near future?
[Caroline] Yes! Definitely! We have some plans up our sleeves for this winter, so be sure to stay tuned and follow us on Spotify and our socials to see what we’ve got coming!
