Meet Triple Addiction; an alt/hard rock band with a country influence here to change the game for the 2019 music scene and beyond. They've just released the second, and last, single 'American Heartbreak' leading up to their upcoming LP under the same name. The New Jersey group spoke to us about their biggest musical influences, motivations, and what they hope those will gain from taking the time to listen to their creations.
1.How would you describe your upcoming LP "American Heartbreak" in five words or less?
Real, Open, Ourselves, Heartfelt
2.What were some of your most stressful as well as most enjoyable moments that occurred while in the studio creating/recording the LP "American Heartbreak"?
We took on the mantle of self producing and self recording this album, so that in itself was very stressful. We tried to work with other people in the past, and while they were super talented and willing to get the project done, they didn’t have the same vision for what we wanted. One day we just said “Why don’t we do it ourselves?” In that span of time we were able to re-write, and discover the type of band we wanted to be instead of the band we thought we should be. The stress of deadlines, finding guitar tones, getting the album mixed, and much more was all very stressful, but it worked! We became closer as a band throughout this process, and closer as brothers. The best moments were getting to listen back to a track that we felt was awesome, or having a good time messing with background vocals. We finally were able to come up with something we were proud of, and it was so enjoyable to finally have that.
3.Who are some of your greatest musical influences, and how have you incorporated pieces of their sound into your music?
The first band we ever started listening to as kids was Nickelback (believe it or not). They always had a rock edge, but knew how to write a killer ballad when it was needed. Chad Kroeger is one of the best song writers, hands down. We studied a lot of his writing style and tried to incorporate some of that into our own writing. When we started to grow up we gravitated towards other styles that our 12 year old selves would have never liked. We started listening to bands like Black Stone Cherry, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Eagles, Huey Lewis and the News etc. Those artists made us gravitate more towards the southern rock/ country style we have today. Country music is all about telling stories, and we always loved that aspect of it. On more personal levels, each individual member of this group has a different taste in music which helps create our style. Some of us love Elvis, some love contemporary Christian music (Disciple, Switchfoot), others love straight metal (Metallica, I Prevail), or even pop country (Old Dominion, Darius Rucker, Brantley Gilbert). We try to draw from all those styles and artists to bring about something unique and more “us.”
4.What prompted each of you to choose the instruments you play, and what motivated you to form Triple Addiction?
This is a great question! Like we said earlier, we were highly into Nickelback growing up. The first concert our Dad ever took us to was a Nickelback concert for our 12th birthday. After that we were over the edge, we wanted to be musicians. Starting out Chris and Brandon picked Guitar because they wanted to be the front guys of the group, and Jon chose the Drums because we needed a drummer (he was kind of forced into it at first). Eventually Brandon switched over to Bass and the band picked up Dom as another guitar player. Dom chose to play guitar like a lot of 2000’s kids did, from playing Guitar Hero.
5.Question for Chris, Jon, and Brandon; how did you all meet Dominic? What made you think he would be a right fit for the band? Its funny, we lived down the street from Dom in our old hometown Bridgewater and became friends before any of us picked up any instruments. We started to learn how to play, and Dom would come over to watch us jam to whatever cover song we were playing at the time. He eventually picked up a guitar and started to learn on his own. For years we lost touch. Somehow we reconnected and found out Dom was still playing. Dom just fit the group so well because not only is he a killer guitar player, but he has a heart of gold. We went through guitar player after guitar player, but no one ever fit this band like him. He’s a killer writer, singer, and player, and we are so happy to have him in this group. 6.As three brothers in the same band, what is the most petty thing you've fought over? Awesome question! We never argue about anything ever, we’re one big happy family ;D It is definitely not easy at all to be brothers in the same band. The difference between us and other groups is that brother bond. We grew up telling each other like it was. We don’t pull too many punches because we’ve always been so comfortable with each other. If a part or a lyric sounds terrible, we’ll say it. Sometimes feelings and the brother relationship get in the way, and that can lead to fights. At the end of the day, we’re still close, and things usually go back to normal. 7.Who hogs the charger port most in the bandwagon/van? We aren’t too attached to the old smartphones, so when it dies it dies, till we can find an outlet. Usually Chris has to keep it plugged in to use a GPS, so it’s definitely on him. We’d much rather know where we’re going then post a useless story to Instagram. 8.What should new fans expect from your upcoming single/LP "American Heartbreak"? What can you tell us about both? We hope that people that haven’t heard of us before connect to these songs. We tell stories that are from our lives, but can be related to everyone. We hope anyone new can sing along with us! American Heartbreak is a song about a story as old as time. Guy and Girl are together, they break up, both people are back to the sinking heartbreak feeling until another one comes along. The song has a cool heavy hitting bar anthem vibe. It shows a little bit of our older style with our new direction added in. We wanted to write a relatable song that spins something as sad as heartbreak into a fun vibe. The album as a whole is full of our stories. We wanted to be as real as possible, we didn’t want an album full of the band we “thought” we should be. We wanted an album that is us. It’s full of great guitar riffs, heartfelt lyrics, positive vibes, and a style that feels like home. We are so excited to get both the single and the album out to the public! 9. Does pineapple belong on pizza? No it doesn’t BELONG, but some of us enjoy it on a pizza now and then. Jon is staunchly opposed to Pineapple on pizza. 10. If you were a part of the Scooby Doo gang, who would you be? Jon: Definitely Fred. Jon mostly takes charge with running the group, scheduling work, running everything as efficiently as possible. Sometimes he lets it go to his head, the plan doesn’t work and the group gets caught by monsters. Chris & Dom- Chris is definitely Shaggy, and Dom is Scooby Doo. They both have a very relaxed and laid back attitude. They make each other laugh, are always looking for food, and usually can’t be trusted on their own. They contribute to the group heavily and are always the comic relief. Brandon- He can be a mix of Daphne and Velma. For some reason he has a Velma-ness to him, very hard to explain. He also likes to stay prim and proper fashion wise exactly like Daphne. Both very vital parts to the group The White Whale (our van)- Definitely the Mystery Machine .
